District Announces Administrator Changes

By

The Sherwood School District is pleased to announce the following administrator changes for the 2022-23 school year:

Marleen Carroll, Assistant Superintendent

Mrs. Marleen Carroll, current Director of Curriculum and Instruction, has been selected as the District’s new Assistant Superintendent. Mrs. Carroll will be filling the position vacated by Dr. Joshua Fritts, who has accepted a position with the Beaverton School District.

Mrs. Carroll first joined the Sherwood School District in 2019, serving first as an Associate Director before moving into her current role as a Director in the Teaching and Learning Department. In her time with the District, Mrs. Carroll has led important programs and initiatives to address student academic and behavioral health needs, such as expanding the District’s PreKindergarten program. Before joining the District, she served as an English Language Development Coordinator and District Office TOSA for five years — as well as teaching for three years — in the Corbett School District, in addition to three years with the David Douglas School District as a teacher and TAG Coordinator. Mrs. Carroll also currently serves as an adjunct professor at Portland State University in the Graduate Teacher Education Program.

When asked about her new role, Ms. Carroll shared “I am honored by the opportunity to serve as the next Assistant Superintendent and look forward to partnering with students, staff, and the community to build upon the excellent work happening throughout our schools. I am also excited to support our Teaching and Learning Department and all of our dedicated, dynamic professional educators and school leaders in providing all Sherwood students with the highest quality educational programs and services.”

Penny Salm, Director of Curriculum and Instruction

Miss Penny Salm, current Principal of Hawks View Elementary, has been selected as the next Director of Curriculum and Instruction, as the role will be vacated by Ms. Carroll’s transition to the Assistant Superintendent position.

Miss Salm first joined the Sherwood School District in 1996, having already taught in Indiana for the prior 13 years. In her 26 years with the District, Miss Salm has served the students and families of Sherwood as a teacher, instructional coach, school counselor, grant manager and associate principal, before becoming a Principal of the former Laurel Ridge Middle School in 2014. In 2016 she became the Principal at Hopkins Elementary, where she led the school through significant bond work and the transformation into the current Hawks View Elementary.

“I am excited about the move to this new role and the opportunity to continue to serve Sherwood School District students, staff and families in a different capacity,” noted Miss Salm. “I am deeply passionate about providing high-quality instruction to our students, and look forward to the expanded opportunity I will now have to support the growth and development of our district’s excellent teaching staff in this area.”

Amy Mitchell, Principal of Hawks View Elementary

Mrs. Amy Mitchell, current Associate Principal at Ridges Elementary, has been selected as the next Principal of Hawks View Elementary, as the role will be vacated by Miss Salm’s transition to the Director of Curriculum and Instruction position.

Mrs. Mitchell joined the Sherwood School District six years ago, and first served in the District as the Instructional Coach at Hopkins (now Hawks View) Elementary, before moving to Ridges Elementary, first for a year as the Dean of Students before moving into her current Associate Principal role in 2020. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from University of Oregon in Elementary Education, after which she began her career teaching various grade levels in Reno, Singapore and Beaverton. After making the decision to step out of the classroom, Mrs. Mitchell became a Primary Years Programme (PYP) Coordinator in the Beaverton School District. During that time, she also worked for Lewis & Clark as a supervisor for student teachers.

When asked about her return to the Hawks View Elementary team, Mrs. Mitchell shared, “I am excited and honored to serve as the principal for Hawks View. I have come to know them to be a group of dedicated, hardworking and supportive individuals who value relationships – with each other, students and families. With the anticipation of more normalcy this year, we can move forward with a focus on connection and partnership with our families and community. I look forward to learning and growing alongside the various stakeholders at Hawks View and I know it will be an amazing year together.”

“Being able to fill these important administrative roles from within our existing team is such a benefit to our district, and reflects what amazing leaders we are so lucky to have here in Sherwood!” shared Interim Superintendent Dr. Jeremy Lyon. “I want to thank Marleen, Penny, and Amy for their willingness to take on new roles this close to the start of the school year, and am excited to see the great work these three administrators will accomplish in their service to the students, staff, and families of the Sherwood School District.”
