Scoliosis/Posture Screenings for 5th Grade Students:

Free Scoliosis/Posture screening is offered by our District Nurses for 5th grade students during the scheduled Vision Screenings (dates are listed above).
  • Scoliosis is commonly called "curvature of the spine" and is an exaggerated side to side curvature of the spine -- the spine either curves to the right or the left, or both.
  • Kyphosis is an accentuated curvature of the thoracic spine causing a rounded upper back.
  • Lordosis occurs when the lower back curves inward more than usual (sometimes called "sway back").
The District Nurses will look at the student's posture to check that shoulders and hips are even with each other (symmetrical).  Students will also bend over so that the nurses can test to see if the spine is in a straight line.  The student will be fully clothed, and the screening is not painful and not invasive.

Results from the Scoliosis Screening will be sent home to the parent/guardian in backpack mail.
A copy of the results will go in the student file.
392 students received Scoliosis/Posture screening in 2018/2019, with a 6.6% referral rate.
Please contact the District Nurses is you have any questions about the Scoliosis Screening.
To opt-out of the screening please contact your school office.  Thank you.
