Secondary Math Community Forum, February 24

For the 2015-16 school year, the Sherwood School District will be adding an additional track of math to its 6-12 course progression. Currently, most students take one year of Algebra in the 8th grade and move to Geometry in high school. About 35% of students end up repeating Algebra in high school. To address this issue and ensure a deeper understanding of Algebra for all students, the District will alter the math progression in middle school and most students will now take Algebra as freshmen in high school. Advanced tracks will be available that will allow many students to take Algebra or Geometry as 8th graders. Ultimately, this change is allowing students to progress at a pace that meets their individual needs.

During this transition, a one-year plan is in place to accommodate our 7th grade students and 8th grade students currently taking Algebra. Please attend our Secondary Math Community Forum on February 24 at 6:30pm in Laurel Ridge Middle School Commons, to learn about this exciting change and what it means for your students.

Budget Community Forum, February 25

The first of two Budget Community Forums in the 2015-16 budget development season will be held on February 25, in the Middleton Elementary Cafeteria, 6:30-7:30pm. Topics will include: Oregon School Funding, Co-Chairs’ Budget Framework, and the financial impact on the District.

Early Release/Late Start Community Forum, March 3

In response to needs identified through Superintendent Staff Forums and the strategic planning goals identified in September 2014, we are re-examining our monthly early release for teacher collaboration, including frequency, duration, time of day, and day of week.  We are exploring options to allow teachers more time for collaboration while not reducing student instructional time. We will be hosting an Early Release/Late Start Community Forum to gather input on Tuesday, March 3, at 6:00pm in the Cafeteria at Middleton Elementary.

Smarter Balanced Community Forum, March 9

Washington County schools will be hosting a joint community forum on the new Smarter Balanced assessments on March 9, at 6:30pm at Hillsboro High School. Rob Saxton, Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Oregon, and Derek Brown, Director of Assessment for ODE, will be presenting to parents and answering questions. We will have a room available to meet with Sherwood parents immediately following their presentation. This a great opportunity to learn about these new state assessments. Hillsboro High School, 3285 SE Rood Bridge Road, Hillsboro.
