Sherwood School District would like to congratulate Sherwood High School senior Ariel Flach for being selected as a Semifinalist in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship competition.  Ariel was selected based on her outstanding score on the PSAT exam.

Approximately 16,000 students nationwide were selected and will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for 8,000 National Merit Scholarships worth $35 million that will be awarded next spring.  Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition.  About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain the Finalist standing, and more than half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship.

At Sherwood High School, Ariel is in National Honor Society and demonstrates a great passion for music and art.  She serves as a drum major in the marching band, plays flute in the wind ensemble, and plays piano in the jazz band.  Her talents in ceramic and 3-dimensional art have led to her selection in National Art Honor Society.  Ariel hopes to attend the University of Colorado, Chapman University, or the University of Oregon to pursue a degree in music.

“We are so proud of Ariel and her selection as a National Merit Semifinalist. She is an outstanding representative of Sherwood High School in every way,” said Sherwood High School Principal Ken Bell.
