The Sherwood School District will join the other 196 school districts throughout Oregon to celebrate January as “School Board Recognition Month,” Superintendent Heather Cordie announced during the Board of Directors meeting on January 9, 2019.

“Being a public school board member is one of the toughest volunteer jobs there is, requiring countless hours spent working towards the best interests of students,” shared Superintendent Cordie. “We are so fortunate in our district to have the opportunity to work with a board that is truly dedicated to the service of our staff, students, and families.”

School board members represent their fellow citizens’ views and priorities, while providing oversight and input towards the management of the community’s public schools. They also reinforce the principle of local control over public education, which is an important, highly valued aspect of education in Oregon.

In October 2018, Governor Kate Brown signed a proclamation naming the month of January as School Board Recognition Month. “Too often the efforts of school board members go unrecognized,” noted Superintendent Cordie. “It is exciting to me to that the important work of school board members is recognized throughout the state, including at the Governor’s level.”

As part of recognizing the Board of Directors during the month of January, Sherwood School District presented each school's library with a book donated in honor of a Board member, as well as the Board’s ASB Student Representative Shaurya Gaur.
