Distance Learning Update and Device Distribution

Last night the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) provided new guidance to Oregon schools on student education during the school closure.  Previously, guidance from the Governor and the ODE directed schools to provide students with Supplementary Education Resources. These resources did not introduce new content, and the activities were not required or assessed for a grade.  Yesterday, this guidance changed, and schools are directed to implement a Distance Learning plan by April 13.  


Distance learning is roughly defined as providing schooling while the teachers and students are not in the same location, to the extent that it is practical.  While it cannot replace the classroom environment, it does provide students with the opportunity to learn new content and continue their education during this extended closure.  Last night, the ODE released new guidance to schools for how to make this change. Our team has spent much of today reviewing this guidance and starting to learn what it means for our students.  You can review the guidance by clicking here.


In Sherwood, a task force has been working for the past two weeks on a plan for Distance Learning.  Although this guidance will necessitate some adjustments to our plans, we are well positioned to make this happen.  As we continue to learn about implementing this guidance, we will communicate more in the coming days. 

 

Device Distribution

One critical step to implementing Distance Learning is ensuring that all of our students have access to a device and the internet.  To that end, the District is working hard to distribute iPads and Chromebooks to elementary students and their families, and recently shared a survey to assess technology needs. Phone follow-up has occurred for families who did not respond to the survey.  If you indicated on the survey a need for a device, please review the information below.


Please go to your student's school on Wednesday, April 1 and Thursday, April 2 to pick up their device. In order to observe Oregon Health Authority’s social distancing guidelines, we ask that you observe the following:

  • At all times, maintain a minimum of 6 feet distance from others. 

  • Do not come if you are sick. Fill out the Device Pickup Survey and indicate a need for an alternate method.

  • If possible, please observe the following schedule for pickup. We have enough devices for every elementary student.

Devices Loaned to Families

  • PreK - 2: iPads

  • 3-5: Chromebooks

  • 6-12 already have Chromebooks

    • If there is an issue with your secondary student’s device, please use the Device Pickup Survey to communicate your needs.


FAQ’s

  • Can I have a friend pick up the device for my student?

    • Devices can only be picked up by the student, accompanied by an adult from their family. 

  • I can’t pick up during the scheduled time. How can I get a device?

    • If families cannot attend in either pickup window, fill out the Device Pickup Survey and indicate a need for an alternative.

  • I missed the survey, or said my student didn’t need a device, but it turns out they need a device. What should I do?

    • If you can make the pickup window above, please come. If you realize that you need a device after the pickup window, please complete the Device Pickup Survey.


Internet Hotspots

  • Families who indicated they needed an internet hotspot will receive one at no cost from the district. Hotspots are in high demand nationally and our shipment has not yet arrived. As soon as it does, we will reach out directly to those families.
