Coronavirus Information

posted Mar 1, 2020, 5:25 PM by Christine Andregg

On Friday night, the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) announced its first presumptive case of novel (new) coronavirus (COVID-19).  As has been reported, the individual is a resident of Washington County, and an employee of the Lake Oswego School District. The proximity of this case hits close to home for our students, families, and staff here in Sherwood, and as the OHA continues their investigation, we will provide updates as the situation evolves.

We are working with public health officials to determine next steps should the illness spread within our area. If at any time public health officials recommend school closures within our District, we will announce those through Flash Alert, School Messenger, our website, and our social media channels.  We encourage you at this time to check your Flash Alert subscription and download the app, if you have not done so already. For more information, please visit the Emergency Information page on our website.

The CDC recommends taking the following precautions to stay healthy:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. (If soap is unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.)

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

  • Stay home when you’re sick to avoid infecting others.

  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a cleaning spray or wipe.

We are working closely with our staff to keep our schools clean and students healthy. We will be creating additional hand sanitizing stations throughout our buildings, and will be using cleaning supplies compliant with CDC recommendations. Intensity and pace of cleaning will be adjusted as needed.

Staff who are ill should stay home and communicate with their supervisor. As with any infectious disease, students experiencing symptoms of illness should remain home from school, and parents/guardians are encouraged to seek guidance from their healthcare provider.  For more information about the symptoms to watch for, please see the following links: English/Spanish

The novel (new) coronavirus started spreading in Wuhan, China, so there have been some media reports about discrimination against Asians and Asian-Americans. Bullying of students based on race, color, national origin, or disability is unacceptable in our school district.
