Budget Committee approves proposed budget

On May 22, 2012, the Sherwood School District Budget Committee met to receive the superintendent’s budget message, hear public testimony and discuss the elements of the budget proposal.  Following two hours of rich dialogue, focused primarily on instructional furlough days, the committee unanimously approved the proposed budget, and directed the District team to pursue two additional furlough days, district-wide, with all employee groups.

If negotiations are successful, the savings from the district-wide, two day closure would mitigate the loss of classroom teachers by 3.8 positions; under the current proposal, 8.5 certified teaching positions will be eliminated.

District administrators, confidential and certified staff members have already agreed to a 0% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) and three furlough days, which was taken into account when developing the estimated reduction target of $1,250,000.  Negotiations with the classified union are still ongoing; the classified contract guarantees a 3.1% COLA, based upon the Portland Consumer Price Index (CPI).

The Budget Committee also approved the 2012/13 levy of the District’s permanent rate of $4.8123 per thousand dollars of assessed value and $10,398,182 for debt service.

Two additional Budget Committee meetings, tentatively scheduled for May 24 and May 29, have been cancelled.  A budget hearing and vote by the Board of Directors to adopt the budget will take place on June 12, 2012.  Details and an agenda will be posted on the district’s website.
